It's not uncommon for musicians to quibble with the labels used to describe their sound, but Justin Townes Earle embraces the tag "roots musician." "I think it's accurate," Earle says by phone from home ...in New York, on a rare break from a tour that comes to Milford Thursday, Dec. 8. Not only that, he says, it implies an essential continuity with the past. "I've always very blatantly paid my respects to the people that came before me with my records," Earle says, a roster that includes Hank Williams Sr.; Earle's namesake, Townes Van Zandt; and his father, Steve Earle. "I think the roots of music are a very important thing that is being lost very quickly in my generation of musicians. Luckily there's a few people who know what they're doing, and they're keeping the tradition alive. That's the only way we're going to stay honest."
